Dental anxiety and sedation

In the case of a visit to the dentist’s clinic whether for periodic examination or treatment, people consider dental clinic a source of fear and anxiety, which affects the quality of treatment that may be provided in the dentist clinic in scientific and professional ways by the dentist.
Studies have shown that 75% of people suffer from dental phobia, so this fear may make a person bear the pain of his teeth but not to dare to go to the dentist’s office.

Some people are in a state of great psychological fear before visiting the dentist, where they cancel their visit to the dentist, but this is certainly not a solution, especially since dental problems do not go away on their own.
Every dental clinic should provide a comfortable, friendly and welcoming environment, with some encouraging music and watching movies, or playing games for children to reduce stress and fear to get rid of the patient’s fear. But these methods are no longer enough to overcome the fear of visiting a dentist.

Anesthesia is used to help the patient to undergo medical procedures and surgery without pain or suffering. There are mainly two types of anesthesia available in dental settings :

Sedation: Calming the central nervous system to a minimum, discouraging anxiety and creating a long-term memory for events, but without losing consciousness.

Local anesthesia: To prevent the transmission of nerve impulses between a specific part of the body and the central nervous system, causing loss of sensation in this part of the body.

Sedation

The objectives of sedation
Pain relief (reduces sensation, and prevents self-reflexes), you will leave with a smile on your face, and with little memory about the session. Muscle relaxation, and in only one dental appointment, lots of dental work can be done.

Different sedation methods the dentist may use to relieve dental anxiety:

Oral Sedation: very strong anti-anxiety drugs for adults one pill before visiting the dentist’s clinic, and advised to be accompanied with someone as a safety measure. Where the person feels completely relaxed and his nerves began to relax a little, which facilitates procedures in the dental clinic.
Inhalation Sedation: Funny gas is a mixture of nitrous gas and oxygen and under the supervision of an experienced specialist inhale the patient this gas using a mask that is positioned over the nose, which relaxes the muscles and nerves, which facilitates the treatment in the dentist clinic and ends it quickly without being exposed to the fear of needles, sounds, smells of the dental materials and equipment. It will make you calm, yet can speak and conscious about everything happening around you. After finishing the visit, you return to normal breathing and can continue your day in a normal way.
IV Sedation: It also starts with a pill for relaxation, then your dentist will insert an IV in a very gentle way which will leave you fully aware, including the process of breathing and swallowing, but in a deep relaxation state and used this case of people who suffer from severe fear of the dental clinic and children who cannot tolerate the dental chair and cannot do any dental procedure with any of the previous ways. It is also used in dental treatment for people with special needs.
